During the intervening “liminal” period, the characteristics of the ritual subject (the “passenger”) are ambiguous; he passes through a cultural realm that has few or none of the attributes of the past or coming state. […] The attributes of liminality or of liminal personae (“threshold people”) are necessarily ambiguous, since this condition and these persons elude or slip through the network of classifications that normally locate states and positions in cultural space. Liminal entities are neither here nor there; they are betwixt and between the positions assigned and arrayed by law, custom, convention, and ceremonial. As such, their ambiguous and indeterminate attributes are expressed by a rich variety of symbols in the many societies that ritualize social and cultural transitions. Thus, liminality is frequently likened to death, to being in the womb, to invisibility, to darkness, to bisexuality, to the wilderness, and to an eclipse of the sun or moon.

1. Na prahu; práve za prahom; vznikajúce. Vo význame: „liminálne porozumenie sebe samému.“
2. Sotva vnímateľné. Vo význame: „liminálna vôňa alebo liminálny dotyk na pokožke.“
3. (Kultúrna antropológia) Tranzitný; v čase ľudského života, kedy sa človek mení, posúva z jedného štádiá/stavu (cez prah) do iného.

Počas prechodného „liminálneho“ obdobia sú vlastnosti subjektu rituálu („prechádzajúceho“) nejasné. Prechádza kultúrnou oblasťou, ktorej atribúty sa líšia aj od minulého aj od nasledovného stavu.[…] Charakteristiky liminality alebo liminálnych osôb („ľudí na prahu“) sú nutne nejasné, pretože toto postavenie a tieto osoby sa vymykajú alebo vypadávajú zo siete klasifikácií, ktoré za normálnych okolností umiestňujú stavy a postavenia do kultúrneho priestoru. Liminálne bytosti nie sú ani tu ani tam; nachádzajú sa medzi pozíciami určenými a stanovenými zákonom, zvyklosťou, konvenciou a obradom. Ich nejasné a neurčité charakteristiky sú vyjadrené širokou škálou symbolov v rôznych spoločnostiach, ktoré ritualizujú spoločenské a kultúrne prechody. Liminalita sa často prirovnáva k smrti, k postaveniu v lone, k neviditeľnosti, temnote, bisexualite, k divočine a k zatmeniu Slnka či Mesiaca.
